On March 18, boyfriend of tennis world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, Konstantin Koltsov, died at the age of 42. Koltsov was also an athlete – he played in the NHL (144 games for Pittsburgh) and for the Belarusian national team. At the time of his death, Koltsov was in Florida where Sabalenka, who resides there, was preparing for the Miami Open but will no longer participate.
Currently, there is no official information about the cause of Koltsov's death. However, several rumors are being discussed in Belarusian hockey circles. We've compiled them all into one post.
A blood clot broke off.
This was reported by the Belarusian website Smartpress. This site claimed to have received information from the press service of the Russian hockey club Salavat Yulaev, where Koltsov worked as a coach at the time of his death. However, nothing was written about the cause of Koltsov's death on social media or on the Salavat Yulaev website. Therefore, this version is not believed.
Car accident
This is what Vladimir Krikunov thinks, the person who coached the Belarusian national team when Koltsov played there.
«Someone says that a blood clot broke loose. But my son called just now. They are already saying it's related to something with the car,» Krikunov said.
But Krikunov doesn't give any guarantees. And the hockey circles are mostly discussing another version.
Fell out of the window.
Here's the version of Koltsov's death that is being discussed the most in hockey circles. They say that Koltsov fell out of the window of a multi-story building and died from the fall. Was it suicide? Was it an accident? No one can answer.
Sabalenka has once again lost an important man. Her father died from illness at the age of 43 when she was 19 years old. Aryna said it was difficult for her at that time, she often cried.
Sabalenka and Koltsov were together for almost four years. Once, for Aryna's sake, Koltsov left his wife, with whom he had lived for 15 years and had three sons.
